Bamboo Reed

Bamboo reed and mat painting is one of the major industries of Kerala. There are many local artists who are skilled in this traditional art. This work requires a great deal of concentration on the part of the artists. The woven bamboo mats are used as a canvas for paintings to be done on them. The painting can done on any bamboo product but the paintings that are more popular are the mat paintings.

The paintings done on bamboo mats are of gods, goddess, animals, birds, scenery etc. This requires a great deal of concentration and skill. Their work is first initiated by placing the correct size of mat which is utilized as a canvas for painting. They then create designs by painting sketches on these mats. The basic coating is done on the mat which is then followed by the design on it.

These come in different sizes and attractive colours. The artists initially make mats of required size and draw the sketch according to the required painting. This is finished with bamboo reed frames at bottom and top with a tag for hanging the completed painting.
