Coimbatore

Coimbatore is the second largest city on the foots of the majestic Nilgirl Hills in Tamil Nadu situated on the banks of Noyyal River. It is also known as Kovai and is one of the major industrial cities in India. It is also called the Manchester of South India for the numerous textile mills that can be found here. Coimbatore is famous for its textile factories, engineering firms, automobile part manufacturers, health care facilities and educational institutions. The climate of Coimbatore is pleasant and is one of the places where you can find hospitality at its best. Coimbatore derived its name from the local Goddess Koniyamman. There are also a number of other industrial units here that produce engineering equipments and electronic items. The best time to visit Coimbatore is Winter.

Tourist Attractions

VOC Park and Zoo

The V.O. Chidambaram park is one of the places in India where there are many attractions clubbed into one. The park has an aquarium which has a large collection of different species of fish. The park has a mini Zoo attached to it and there is a toy train introduced for the amusement of children. The park is very popular among children.

Agriculture University

The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University is one of the best Universities in Asia. The University is spread over an area of 300 hectares and the botanical garden of the University is a prime attraction. The University has a garden with different species of flowering plants and trees.

Perur Temple

The Perur Temple in Coimbatore is one of the seven Kongu Siva temples. This holy temple is situated on the outskirts of Coimbatore and is thronged by hundreds of devotees. This is a very ancient temple with later modifications and constructions done to the outer part.

Marudhamalai Temple

Marudhamalai is another temple situated on the outskirts of Coimbatore. It is situated at a height of over 500 feet in a plateau on the Western Ghats and is around 15 kms north west of Coimbatore. The deity here is Lord Subramanya and is widely visited by a large number of tourists. Legends say that many miracles are performed in this temple and devotees who asks for favours from god with a pure heart are always granted their wish. Many festivals are held in the temple premises.

Forest College

Another main attraction at Coimbatore is the Forest College. It attracts a large number of tourist and is one of the oldest institutions of its kind in the country. There is a museum at the college that has a large collection of minerals, rocks, pests, snakes and insects. Another speciality of the college is that it imparts training to forest rangers.

Siruvani Waterfalls

The Siruvani waterfalls and dam are located at a distance of 40 kms from Coimbatore. The falls are located in the Western Ghats and the water of Siruvani river is known for its taste and is known to be the second sweetest lake water in the world. The water is also considered to be rich in minerals. The place is a tourist hot spot and is visited by number of tourists.

Annamalai Wildlife Sanctuary

The Annamalai Wildlife Sanctuary is located at a distance of 90 kms from Coimbatore, and has an altitude of 1400 ms. It is home to a large number of animals like elephant, tiger, panther, deer, wild dog, jackal, pangolin and civet cat. One can also find a large variety of birds in this sanctuary.

Travel

Air: The airport at Coimbatore, the Peelamedu airport is situated 10 kms from the city and operate regular flights to Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi and Madurai.

Rail: Coimbatore is a major railway station and has trains to Chennai, Rameswaram, Madurai, Bangalore, Mumbai, Kanyakumari, Kozhikode, Mettupalayam, Kochi and Delhi.

Road: Coimbatore is well connected with all major places in South India.
