Getting into Kerala by Air

Kerala has three international airports at Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode and is well connected with important domestic and international airports. Kochi airport is considered as the fourth busiest international airport in India. There are international flights from Abu Dhabi, Bander Abbas, Colombo, Dammam, Doha, Dubai, Kuwait, Muscat, Riyadh, Sharjah, and Singapore that will take you to Kochi. Other two international airports at Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode can also be reached from the countries of Middle East and Singapore. Overseas tourists can also find some direct charter flights from London and regional airports to Kochi and Thiruvanthapuram.

Kochi International Airport

Kochi International Airport also known as Cochin International Airport is located at Nedumbassery, near Kochi in India. Thiruvanthapuram International Airport

Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is the first international airport in India outside the metropolitan cities. It is located around 3.7 kms Thiruvananthapuram and was first established in 1932. In 1991 it was upgraded into an international airport. The airport covers an area of 20,000 sq. ms and is of a tubular design and provides all modern facilities such as escalators, elevators and aerobridges. Trivandrum International Airport has direct flights to Kuwait, Singapore, Maldives, Colombo, Sharjah, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, Jeddah and Dubai. It is also linked with other cities in India such as Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, Kochi, Kozhikode and Bangalore by domestic flights.

Kozhikode Airport

Kozhikode Airport also known as Karipur Airport is located at Karipur in the Malappuram district, near Kozhikode. It is located at around 26 kms from the Kozhikode Railway Station. Though quite a few international flights are connected to this airport, it mainly has domestic flights connecting to many parts of India.

The important cities and towns of Kerala like Kochi, Ernakulam, Kottayam are well connected by an intricate network of railroads. Many express and mail trains run between the important railheads of Kerala and the major cities nationwide. The most important railheads of kerala are Thiruvananthapuram; Kochi; Shornur; and Kozhikode. Konkan railway lying along the north western coast of India is another excellent way to reach Kerala.

The Thiruvananthapuram Central Railways station lies at a distance of 15 Km from the famous Kovalam beach. Kolkata is 2583 kms, New-Delhi is 3054 kms, Hyderabad is 1379 kms and Chennai is 923 kms away from Thiruvananthapuram.

Fast moving electric trains run between Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam lying at a distance of 35kms away from the International airport at Cochin.

There are plenty of bus services in Kerala linking all major cities and towns. The road conditions are good and tourists can avail comfortable journey by bus. Kerala Road Transport Corporation Buses (KSRTC Bus), privately owned buses run frequently and at regular intervals. You can choose according to speed or comfort level from a range of super- fast, super- express or luxury buses run by private bus companies and state transport departments as well.

One can avail the facility of self-driven or chauffer-driven cars in all the big cities and district headquarters in Kerala.
