Horn Carving

Horn carving in Kerala has been in existence from time immemorial. The craft is mainly concentrated in Thiruvananthapuram, Trichur, Kasaragod, Ernakulam and Kochi and is being practised by the artisans belonging to the Viswakarma Community. Horns are available throughout the state. Skilled craftsmen from Trichur, Kasaragod, Ernakulam and Cochin practice Horn Carving. However the artisans in Thiruvananthapuram have really excelled in this field. They have achieved a lot of fame and glory because of their talents in Horn Carving. The buffalo horns are heated and oiled. The horns becomes soft and becomes much easier to work upon them. The craftsmen put their ideas and designs into the material and bring about a lot of variation in the color. The final product of Horn Carving are very admirable.

The most common products made out of Horn Carving are models of birds and animals, toy furniture and small snake boats. The list of other items carved out of horns include a wide variety of utilitarian items such as paperweights, vases, buttons, trays, pen stands, lamps, combs, cigarette cases, ashtrays etc.
