Kozhikode or Calicut is situated on the Arabian Coast and has a long and chequered history. It was the capital of the powerful Zamorins. Vasco-de-Gama, the first European, landed in India at Kappad near Kozhikode in 1498 A.D.  It was the trading centre for Europeans with the Dutch, the French and the British dominating the area and was very rich in spices. It is also described as the 'perfect harbour'

Kadalundi

Kadalundi is famous for its bird sanctuary, which is about 25kms from Kozhikode and 7 kms from Beypore port on the Arabian Sea, Malappuram. The bird sanctuary is spread over a cluster of islands surrounded by hillocks where the Kadalundi River flows into the Arabian Sea. The place is locally known as Kadalundi Nagaram. This virgin land is the abode of hundreds of species of native birds and over 60 varieties of migratory birds that flock here in large numbers during February-March. Kadalundi is also known for a wide variety of fish, mussels and crabs.

Beypore

Beypore is located about 10 kms south of Kozhikode town at the mouth of the Chaliyar River. Historically, it has a special place as being one of the prominent ports and fishing harbours, and was also an important trade and maritime centre during the days of the early Arab and Chinese travellers and later the Europeans. The attractions in Beypore include the fishing harbour, about a kilometre from the shipbuilding yard and Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary, which is about 7 kms from Beypore.

Kappad Beach

Kappad Beach is about 16 kms from Kozhikode town. Kappad is also known as the gateway to the Malabar Coast. This is the place where 501 years ago the Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama (1460-1524) sailed in and stepped into Kerala. On the rocks nearby is a temple, which is believed to be 800 years old. The best route to Kappad is along the backwaters.

Vythiri

Vythiri is one of the most beautiful hill stations of Kerala located at about 100 km from Kozhikode about 1300 m above the sea level. The place is famous for its plantation of coffee, tea, cardamom, pepper and rubber. The main attraction for the tourists visiting Vythiri is its Tree Houses. This are built on trees above 90 ft from the ground in the tropical rainforest and gives a good view of the valley. The Rope bridges hanging over streams leading to cottages offer a spectacular view to tourists.
