Pathanamthitta is located near the Western Ghats and is bordered by hills. This district has vast stretches of forests, rivers and rural landscapes. Pathanamthitta has fertile agricultural land, plantations and forest, paddy, tapioca, varieties of vegetables and spices like cardamom, pepper etc. The district also has extensive rubber plantations. Pathanamthitta is a combination of two words Pathanam and Thitta, which mean an array of houses on the riverside. The total area of the district is 2642 sq. km., of this 1390.73 sq. km, come under forest.

Places to Visit

Aranmula

Aranmula is famous for the Aranmula boat race held on the last week of Onam festival and also for the famous Parthasarathi Temple on the banks of river Pamba. The Parthasarathi Temple (dedicated to Sree Krishna) on the banks of the holy river Pamba attracts large crowds of devotees. The Vijnana Kalavedi at Aranmula imparts training in the traditional arts like Kathakali, classical dances, classical music, as well as Kalaripayattu. Foreign tourists stay here for long periods to get a first hand knowledge of the culture of Kerala. The Parthasarathi Temple here has fine murals from the 18th century.

Pamba/Sabarimala

Pamba is the main halting point while visiting the Sabarimala. The beautiful place gets its name from the Pamba River. Tour to Pamba will be a refreshing change for the tourists. Known as a favourite picnic spot, the Pamba is also called Thriveni Sangam as it is the meeting point of three rivers. The Sabrimala Temple is located on the banks of River Pamba. Sabarimala, the resting place of Lord Ayyappa. The shrine is located 914 m above sea level on the Pampa river valley amidst dense forests.

Kakki

Kakki reservoir is set in sylvan background and is a tourist delight. There is an artificial lake that offers exhilarating boating experience. The surrounding forest area in Kakki has a wide variety of flora and fauna. There is a large population of tigers, elephants, deers and monkey in the forest region.

Konni

Konni is an important junction when you pass through the Kottayam - Punalur route. It is also famous for its elephant rides and the Anakoodu. Anakoodu is where elephants are tamed and trained for work. Konni has been prominent since time immemorial as a haven of wild elephants. The acres of thick forest with wild animals has made Konni emerge as another tourist spot for safaris and trekking.

Perunthenaruvi

The waterfalls at perunthenaruvi near Pampa attracts thousands of people to it. This beautiful natural waterfall is an ideal place to spend your time. This waterfall is situated around 10 kms from Erumely .
