Kerala's culture has been influenced by various religions, however the main religions in Kerala today are Hinduism, Christianity and Islam. Other religions like Jainism and Buddhism have also influenced the culture of the state. The origin of Kerala's religion can be traced back to the Dravidian way of life. Then came the Aryan religions like Jainism, Buddhism and Hinduism from the north. This was followed by the Islamic faith and Christianity.

Today there are 57.38% Hindus, 23.33 Muslims and 19.32 Christians in Kerala. Hinduism is the world's oldest religion and its origin dates back to about 5000 BC. There are sacred texts which include the Vedas, Epics and Puranas, apart from other philosophical treatises. Islam was propagated in Kerala by the traders from the Middle East. They are believed to have settled in the coastal belt of Kerala. Christianity is believed to have been brought to Kerala by St. Thomas, one of the direct disciples of Christ who landed near Muziris in 52 AD. The two other religions that still exist in the state are Jainism and Buddhism.
