Tiruchirapalli

Tiruchirapalli also known as Trichy is the fourth largest city of Tamil Nadu. It is situated on the banks of the river Cauvery and is a fine blend of tradition and modernity built around the Rock Fort. There are other attractions which include several Churches, Colleges and Missions dating back to the 1760s. The town and its fort were originally built by the Nayaks of Madurai. Some of the major attractions in Tiruchirapalli include Rock Fort Temple, Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, Jambukeshwara Temple, St. Lord's Church and Natharvali Dargah etc.

The Rock Fort Temple

The Rock Fort Temple was originally built as a small cave temple by the Pallavas. Later on, the Nayakas developed it to its present position and other additions were made by the Vijaynagar rulers and Nayaks of Madurai. This majestic temple is actually a collection of three temples that is the Manikka Vinayakar temple which is located at the foot of the hill, the Uchhi Pillayar Koyil located at the very top and the Taayumaanavar Koyil Shivastalam located at the middle of the hill. Legends say that the three peaks on the hill were occupied by Shiva, Parvati and Vinayaka. This rock cut temple has several inscriptions of Chola and Pallava period.

Jambukeshwara Temple

The Jambukeshwara Temple or otherwise known as Thiruvanaikaval is dedicated to lord Shiva. It is situated around 2 km east of Srirangam and houses five concentric walls and seven gopurams. Legends say that an elephant once worshipped the Lord under the holy Jambu tree, and hence the name Jambukeshwara. The principal deity is the shiva lingam, almost submerged in water, which flows from the subterranean spring in the sanctum sanctorum.

Srirangam

Srirangam or Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is situated 6 kms north of the city. It is one of the most revered shrines of Lord Vishnu in South India. The temple is a seven rectangular walled courtyard and 21 gopurams. The temple is stood on an island and measures around 250 hectares and is connected to the main land by a bridge. There are some excellent carvings and numerous shrines to various gods. The main deity in the temple is Lord Vishnu. This is probably the largest temple complex in India.

St. John's Church

The St. John's Church was built in 1812. The main feature of this Church is that it has louvred doors. When these doors are opened it turns the church into an airy pavilion. The church is situated in an excellent setting and has marvellous architecture which makes it a site worth visiting.

Travel

Air: The airport at Trichy is located at a distance of 5 kms from the city. The main airlines include Indian Airlines which connects Trichy with Chennai, Sharjah, Kuwait and Colombo. Air Lanka Service connects Tiruchirapalli with Colombo.

Rail: Trichy is an important junction on the Southern Railway. It connects Chennai, Thanjavur, Chidambaram, Madurai, Tirupathi, Tuticorin, Tenkasi, Quilon and Rameswaram on the metre gauge and Bangalore, Coimbatore, Mysore, Kochi, Kanyakumari and Mangalore.

Road: Trichy is well connected by a large network of roads with important cities in India.
