Tirupati

Tirupati is located in the southern side in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. Tirupati is located at the foot hills of Tirumala and the word Tirupati means Lord of Godess Lakshmi.  Considered as one of the sacred places of Hindus, it houses many important temples such as the famous Lord Shri Venkateswara Temple, Padmavati Devi Temple, Sri Agastheswara Temple, Shri Govindarajaswami Temple, Kodandaramaswami Temple and Shri Kapileswaraswami Temple. The Lord Shri Venkateswara temple is the most famous and it stands on the Tiruamala hill. The hills of Tirumala are the world's second oldest rock mountains and stands at a height of 3200 ft above sea level. These hills are spread on an area of 10.33 sq miles. The Tirupati Hills comprises of seven peaks and these represent the seven hoods of Adisesha. These seven peaks are Seshadri, Neeladri, Garudadri, Anjanadri, Vrishabhadri, Narayanadri and Venkatadri.

Tirupati Tirumala Balaji Temple

The Tirupati Tirumala Balaji temple of Sri Venkateswara is located on the seventh peak known as the Venkatachala or the Venkatadri of the Tirupati Hill. It lies on the southern banks of Sri Swami Pushkarini. It is believed that this sacred temple had existed from ancient period and there is mention of it in most of the ancient texts. There is mention in the Sastras, Puranas, Sthala Mahatyams and Alwar hymns that to attain mukti in kali yug one has to worship Sri Venkateswara. All south Indian dynasties, the Pallavas of Kancheepuram, Cholas of Thanjavur, Pandyas of Madurai and the chieftains of Vijayanagar have contributed towards the beautification of the temple. The architecture of the temple is notable in that the main gate has a quadrangular base and there are figures of Hanuman, Kevale Narasimha and Lakshmi Narasimha on the entrance. There are many mandapams in the prakarama area and the Ranga mandapam built according to Vijayanagar style of architecture is the most beautiful.

Sri Varahaswami Temple

Sri Varahaswami Temple is built on the banks of Swami Pushkarini. It is located to the north of Sri Venkateswara temple and the idol of worship is Adi Varaha. According to the age old legends Tirumala was originally the abode of Varahaswami. Lord Sir Venkateshwara stayed at this place only after obtaining permission from Sir Varahaswami. So it is said that the sacred offering of food to Lord should be offered first to Sri Varahaswami. It is also a popular belief that people visiting the Sri Venkateswara Temple should first visit Sri Varahaswami temple.

Sri Anjaneyaswami Temple

Sri Anjaneyaswami Temple is located opposite the Sri Varahaswami temple on the north eastern banks of Swami Pushkarini. According to the Vaishnavite tradition it is customary to have either A Garuda or an Anjaneya oppowite the main temple. At the Sri Anjaneyaswami temple, the hands of the idol of Sri Anjaneyaswami are joined in supplication. Sri Anjenaya or Hanuman Swami is a devotee of Sri Rama.

Swami Pushkarini

The Swami Pushkarini is a tank which is believed to have been the pleasure tank of Lord Vishnu. Ancient legends say that Swami Pushkarini was originally in Vaikuntam and it was brought on Earth by Garuda, for the sport of Sri Venkateswara. It is situated adjacent to the Sri Venkateswara temple. A large number of pilgrims bathe in this tank before entering the main temple. It is believed that the Swami Pushkarini cleanses all sins and bestows prosperity to all people who take bath in this tank.

Sri Govindarajaswami Temple

Sri Govindarajaswami Temple is another temple located at Tirupati and is reknowned for its architecture. The imposing gopuram of the temple could be seen from a distance and there are many sub temples within the main temple premises. Sri Govindarajaswami is the elder brother of Lord Balaji and the temple has been consecrated in 1130 AD by Saint Ramanujacharya.

Sri Kodandaramaswami Temple

The Sri Kodandaramaswami Temple is located in the heart of Tirupati town. The deities of worship in the temple are Sita, Rama and Lakshmana. The temple of Anjaneyaswami can be found directly opposite and it is considered as a sub shrine of this temple. The Sri Kodandaramaswami temple was built by a Chola king during the tenth century AD. Legends say that this temple commemorates the visit of Sri Rama to Tirupati. The main festivals celebrated on a grand scale in this temple are the festivals of Ugadi and Sri Ramanavami. Every year the temple celebrates the Brahmotsavams to the Lord Sri Rama.

Sri Kapileswaraswami Temple

Sri Kapileswaraswami Temple is the only temple in Tirupati dedicated to Lord Shiva and is located around 3 kms to the north of Tirupati. There is also a sacred waterfall called Kapila Teertham which is also known as Alwar Teertham located near this temple. The important festivals in the temple are the Annual Brahmotsavams and festivals like Vinayaka Chavithi, Maha Shivaratri, Skhanda Shasti and Annabhishekam.

Sri Kariya Manikyaswami Temple

The Sri Kariya Manikyaswami Temple is also known as Sri Perumala Swami Temple. It is located 51 kms from Tirupati in Nagiri. Legend say that Lord Vishnu killed Makara - a crocodile and saved Gajendra from this place. Gajendra was an elephant and his ardent worshipper. The most important festivals celebrated in this temple are Kanchi Garuda Seva, Kanuma Utsavam, Rathasaptami and Vaikuntha Ekadasi.

Sri Veda Narayanaswami Temple

The Sri Veda Narayanaswami Temple is situated 70 kms southeast of Tirupati and is a fine example of the Vijaynagar style of architecture. Legends say that Lord Vishnu in his incarnation as Matsya had killed the demon Somakudu at the place and took possession of the Vedas from the demon. The temple houses an image of Vishnu in his Matsya form holding the Sudarsana Chakra.

Travel

Air: The airport at Tirupati is located 15 kms away from the city center. Direct flights operate from Hyderabad and Chennai to Tirupati.

Rail: Direct railway services are available from destinations like Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata and Mumbai.

Road: Tirupati is well connected to the rest of the country by a large network of roads. Both private and government buses operate between Tirupati and other important places of the state.
