Kozhikode (Calicut)

Kozhikode was previously known as Calicut and is located in North Kerala. It was once the capital of the powerful Zamorin and a prominent trade and commerce centre. The Zamorins traded with merchants from Arabia. In 1498 the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama landed at Kappad Beach, near Kozhikode. After the British grew to become the dominant trading power, Kozhikode, renamed Calicut, became an important British trading outpost. It was also the land of the Malabar Mahotsavam. The ancient monuments, lush green countryside, serene beaches, historic sites, wildlife sanctuaries, rivers, hills, a unique culture and a warm, friendly ambiance make this district a much sought after destination. The unexplored backwaters of Kozhikode holds great promises of an enchanting holiday. The Pookot fresh water Lake at the Kozhikode backwaters is a very prominent tourist attraction. Elathur, the canal and the River Kallai are favorite haunts for boating. Kadalundi is another favourite sport with its beautiful bird sanctuary. Korapuzha, the venue of the Korapuzha Jalotsavam is fast becoming a popular water sport destination.
