Kunchan Smarakam Fort

The Kunchan Smarakam fort is located 30 kms from Palakkad. The Kunchan Smarakam fort of Palakkad is not a usual historical monument it is a memorial built as a tribute to the famous poet of Kerala, Kunchan Nambiar. Kunchan Nambiar had spent his early childhood at Killikkurussimangalam in Kerala state and his boyhood at Kudamaloor and his youth at Ambalappuzha. In 1748 he moved to Thiruvananthapuram, first to the court of Martanda Varma and later to the court of Kartika Tirunal Rama Varma. He had already written several of his works before leaving Ambalapuzha. Thullal was introduced in the 18th century by Kunchan Nambiar. He was a satirist, who brought literary wit and humour within the ken of common man. His innovative satiric art form Ottanthullal reflected his deep sense of social responsibility. The Kunchan Smarakam Fort now serves as an institution for young people interested in satirical art forms. The festival of "Navaratri" is celebrated with much grandeur here. The birthday of the poet, which falls on 5th of May, is also celebrated with much fanfare.
