Metal inlay

Wood inlay is the process of decorating the surface of wood by setting in pieces of materials such as brass metal, ivory, bone, plastic, or wood of different colours. The artisan smoothens the base of the wood and the design is traced and etched into the surface. The several components of the inlay are painstakingly assembled to match and fit exactly into the grooves and are then glued in. The design is finished by obtaining the required shades with several coats of polish.

The laminated woodcraft originated in and around Ernakulam District in Kerala around 1975. The wood that is commonly used for this craft are Rosewood, Plywood and Whitewood. Another method used to produce wood inlay article is that rosewood and whitewood are cut into required sizes and pasted on the plywood pieces according to the various designs. A final polishing is given to it and the brass metal pieces are fixed in different designs to make the final product ready. The products include Anjali Face, Dancing Lady, Peacock, Candle Stand, Star Wheel, Kathakali Heads, Wheel of Furniture, Key Stand and Butterfly etc.
