Sree Chithra

The Sree Chithra Art gallery is located near the Napier Museum, Thiruvananthapuram. This Gallery established in 1935 has a century old world famous paintings of Raja Ravi Varma, the pioneering Indian genies in the art of oil painting who was born and brought up at Kilimanoor Palace in Kerala, is a star attraction in this gallery. Famous Roerich paintings, miniatures from various parts of the world, manuscripts of great archival significance and the mural paintings unique to Kerala make the display in the gallery wholesome and complete. The collection also includes paintings from China, Japan, Tibet and Bali. Other masterpieces of Raja Ravi Varma, are displayed in this gallery. His works include a number of portraits of Maharajahs and members of royal family, distinguished British residents and prominent figures. Antiques and curios once owned by Travancore royal lineage are also displayed here. There are Bengali paintings, Rajasthani, Mughal miniatures, Tanjavore paintings and selected works of Svetosku Roerich, a Russian artist. Shri Chitra Art Gallery exhibits a collection of Indian art including examples from early to modern schools of work. Shri Chitra is considered one of the most famous art galleries in Kerala. Paintings by Raja Ravi Varma, one of India's foremost artists, are displayed along with a variety of works from Mughal, Balinese, Rajasthani and Rajput, miniature paintings and Tanjore paintings embellished with semi- precious stones. Bronze images, ivory carvings, temple chariots and historical ornaments present an excellent collection.

Exotic works from China, Japan, Tibetan Buddhists and South India are also worth viewing!
