Thrissur Archaeological

The Thrissur Archaeological museum is located near the Thrissur Zoo about 2 km from Thrissur town. The Archaeological Museum is housed in the building constructed in 1904 by the then Raja of Kollangode for his daughter. The building is constructed in a mixed Style, blending traditional and western architecture. The Archaeological Museum is located at the Kollengode Palace, which is an architectural delight. It houses a gallery of murals from all over Kerala and preserves a rare treasure of Veerakallu, temple models, olagrandhangal (manuscripts on dry palm leaves), megaliths etc. The collections of pictures in the gallery was the result of a number of year's work in making exact copies of a selection out of the many old Mural paintings found in the Mattancherry Palace and certain Temples in the former Cochin State. The copying work was done with the utmost fidelity and skill by Sri.T.R.Madhava Warrior, V.S. Unni Nair and N.O.Antony. Veerakallu or hero stones are stone engravings and sculptures of figures and weapons belonging to the heroes of olden days. Most of these were recovered from the forests of Wayanad and Thrissur. The exhibits in the Museum stone-age tools, mieroliths, excavated materials from Indus Valley and Harappa, excavated Materials from megalithic sites likeUrn burials (nannangadi) black and red wares, black wares russet coated wares, beads,iron implements, excavated materials from Cheraman Parambu (Kodungalloor) stone sculptures ranging from 10 th century to 17 th century, Bronze sculptures ranging from 12 h century to 18 h century, copies of Mural paintings,Temple models etc. The Museum has the largest collection of excavated materials from Megalithic Sites in Kerala.Excavated materials from Nenmeni Village, near Kollangode also are exhibited in this Museum.
